Mary Scruggs Works By Women Festival

This is way belated, but in the spring my comedy sketch, Baby’s Carbon Footprint, was chosen for Second City’s Mary Scruggs Works by Women Festival. Here’s a bit about the festival from Second City:

The Second City Training Center in Chicago proudly presents The Mary Scruggs Works By Women Festival 2019. Named for Mary Scruggs, who served as head of The Second City Training Center’s Writing Program from 2001 until her death in 2011, the festival was created to honor and continue her legacy.Back for its eighth consecutive year, the annual event features a full-day lineup of world premiere sketches and songs written by female-identifying and non-binary student writers of the Second City Training Center, salons, panel discussions, and a selection of writing, stand-up, and storytelling workshops. Performances of award-winning sketches will be held in the evening at Donny’s Skybox Theater.

I was so thrilled to be chosen; honestly this was one of the coolest and most unexpected experiences I’ve had as a writer. It was surreal and amazing to be among a bunch of young hungry women comedians from Chicago…pretty sure I was the only writing professor from the snowy north in the lineup. The Scruggs fest was a huge burst of confidence for my comedy writing, and I’m excited to see what’s next.
